Wilhelm Preyer coined the phrase "brain writing" from handwriting experiments with handicapped people. When subjects wrote with a pen in their mouth, Pryer found that the same signs appeared in their writing that would have appeared if the person had used his/her hand indicating that writing is a function of the brain. These scientific experiments confirmed that writing is an expressive movement in the same way as gestures, facial expression and gait hence the term "brain writing".
